Lifting

Operated by GS CRANE under contract. Reach for these when the lift is the job — not when a load needs delivering.

Mobile crane

A wheeled hydraulic crane that drives to your site, sets its outriggers and lifts. The machine for a lift that is itself the job — setting a machine into a factory bay, lifting steel into place, craning plant over a wall.

Figures to confirm. A lift capacity without its radius is not a simplification — it is a different and wrong number — so neither is published until both are.

Heavy crane

The large-capacity end of the fleet, for lifts a mobile crane cannot reach or carry. Rigged on site rather than driven onto it, so it is planned work with a lift study behind it — not a same-day call-out.

Haulage

Getting a load from one place to another. The choice between them is made by the load, not by the price.

Curtain-side haulage

Palletised and general cargo on a Scania 380 6×2 prime mover pulling a tri-axle curtain-sider. Loaded and unloaded from the side by forklift.

DECK
40 ft. Malaysia caps a semi-trailer at 12,500 mm, so 40 ft fits and 45 ft does not.
AXLES
1 steer + 2 tractor rear + 3 trailer.
GVW
Combination BDM at a wheelbase of 13.1 m or more. Weight Restrictions (Federal Roads) Order 1989, List I, 1:2:3.
PAYLOAD
40 t ceiling at an 11 m wheelbase, less roughly 15–16 t of tractor and trailer tare. The registered figure is BDM − BTM off the vehicle’s own card.

Flatbed and low-bed haulage

Machinery, steel and oversize on an open deck. A flatbed can be crane-loaded from above and the load may overhang the deck edge; a curtain-sider, which has a rigid frame and roof, can do neither. For tracked plant and anything over height, the low-bed drops the deck to clear the bridges.

DECK
40 ft. A 20 ft variant runs 7.2 m.
AXLES
4×2 tractor + tri-axle semi.

Combination BDM at a wheelbase of 11.1 m or more. List I, 1:1:3.

Dropside haulage

A rigid lorry with hinged sides that fold flat. Building materials, drums, crates, bagged goods and small plant — anything that has to be loaded or unloaded over the side rather than through a tail, on a job too small to warrant a trailer.

Baby crane

Self-loading delivery for smaller construction jobs. The lorry carries its own crane behind the cab, so nothing is needed at your end — no forklift, no gantry, no second machine hired for the morning. It is a lorry that lifts its own load on and off, not a crane: when the lift itself is the job, the mobile crane is the machine.

Forklift hire

Counterbalance forklift for loading, unloading and moving palletised goods around a yard or factory floor. Also the machine a curtain-side delivery assumes is waiting at your end.

The difference that actually decides it.

A curtain-sider has a rigid frame and a roof. It loads from the sides or the rear by forklift, and it cannot be crane-loaded from above. A flatbed can, and the load may overhang the deck edge. That is why structural steel, plant, prefabricated concrete, pipe and coil go on a flatbed and pallets do not.

And if there is nothing at your end to lift it off — no forklift, no gantry — then neither of those is the answer and it goes on the baby crane, which brings its own.

The one people mix up most: a baby crane and a mobile crane are not the same booking. The baby crane is a lorry that lifts its own load on and off — the lifting exists to serve the delivery, and it is the machine for a smaller construction job where there is nothing on site to take the load down. A mobile crane is hired because the lift itself is the job, and it arrives to do that and nothing else. If you are craning something into position rather than dropping it at a gate, it is the mobile crane you want, and that is GS Crane’s machine.

One more thing worth knowing before you ring. A job is priced either per trip — a flat figure for the run, whatever is on the deck — or per tonne of what is actually carried. Which suits you depends on whether your load fills a lorry or your tonnage moves week to week, and it is worth saying which you want in the first sentence. Both are normal here, and both are on the invoices this office raises.
